Class: Perception & Translation, Foundations / 2020 to ongoing

Students create a series of 3 works that have a conversation with one another, each translating an idea into different materials. They begin with learning how to intentionally make a photograph, rather than ‘take’ one, reading a portion of Sontag’s On Photography and the Exposure article Blurring Distinctions Between Taking vs. Making: Teaching Photography in a Digital Culture (2018, Novak and Bjorngaard). Students then make a drawing that respond to this photograph, rather than of it. Finally, they make an object that responds to this drawing. We use the word object to keep this space open. Students may design a space or make a performance piece as extra credit as well. Below, some student work shows the full ‘conversation’, others are selections. Students work on a writing project with a global focus simultaneously with this visual project.
