Mundane Monochromatics
Class(s): Perception and Translation, Drawing II and Visual Research: Color / 2020 to ongoing
Students are asked to visually research an everyday place, using drawings, audio and video recordings, frottage, and collections. From this body of research, they explore color, choosing the color used the least: “Respect the one you weren’t paying attention to”- Josef Albers. They then create a drawing using this sole color, and its tints and shades, based on their experiences in the space. Students choose their workplaces, their bedrooms, the roadside, parks, even gas stations. The word drawing is not materially bound in this project and students create digital drawings and animations, alongside use of traditional materials, and three dimensional forms. Students are also introduced to color theory in this project.
